I was born and raised in the United States, where the love for crafts is as vibrant as the colors of autumn. From a young age, I learned the charms of crochet from my grandmother, who turned simple yarn into masterpieces of affection and care. It was with this inspiration that I delved into creating these intertwined hearts.

Crochet, for me, is more than just a craft; it’s a form of loving expression. Each stitch is like a note in a song, creating a melody of tenderness and gratitude. And as I worked on this project, I felt that melody resonate with every loop and twist.

The beauty of intertwined crochet hearts lies in their charming simplicity and versatility. They can be small and delicate, perfect for embellishing cards or gifts, or larger and more elaborate, ideal for decorating spaces or creating seasonal garlands.

To get started, all you need are a few skeins of yarn of your choice and a compatible crochet hook, depending on the purpose of your project. If it’s for a coaster, I suggest using a sturdier yarn. Now, if it’s for use in blankets or other projects, a softer, smooth cotton yarn would be ideal.

DIMENSIONS:

10 “ in width by 8” in height.

Gauge is not important.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

100 yards in total of worsted weight yarn, divided into two or three colors (45 yards each for two colors, and 10 yards for one color). Two strands of yarn will be used together for the heart, while the edging will be done with one strand of yarn. For the sample heart, 100% acrylic yarn was used. You’ll also need a size 5.5 mm or J 6 mm crochet hook, scissors, and a yarn needle.

PATTERN DIRECTIONS

Create two heart halves using different colored yarn for each. Begin by holding two strands of yarn together and chaining 4. Slip stitch to form a ring. From this point, work in rows without joining or slip stitching.

Row 1: Chain 3 (this counts as the first double crochet of each row). Work 7 more double crochets into the ring. Do not join. Turn your work. Total = 8 double crochets.

Row 2: Chain 3. Work 2 double crochets into the same space as the chain. Work 2 double crochets into each stitch across. Turn your work. Total = 16 double crochets.

Row 3: Chain 3. Work 2 double crochets into the same space as the chain. Then, work 1 double crochet into the next stitch. Repeat [2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch] across. Do not turn your work. Total = 24 double crochets. Proceed to Strip #1.

Strip #1:

Chain 17. Work double crochets starting from the 4th chain from the hook and continue in each chain. Slip stitch between Rows 3 and 2. Chain 2. Slip stitch between Rows 2 and 1. Proceed to Strip #2.

Strip #2:

Chain 17. Work double crochets starting from the 4th chain from the hook and continue in each chain. Slip stitch at the edge of Row 1 near the ring. Chain 2. Slip stitch at the other edge of Row 1 near the ring. Proceed to Strip #3.

Strip #3:

Chain 17. Work double crochets starting from the 4th chain from the hook and continue in each chain. Slip stitch between Rows 1 and 2. Chain 2. Slip stitch between Rows 2 and 3. Proceed to Strip #4.

Strip #4:

Chain 17. Work double crochets starting from the 4th chain from the hook and continue in each chain. Slip stitch at the top of Row 3. Fasten off your work and weave in the ends.

Combining:

Place the darker heart half on the left and the lighter heart half on the right. Weave the strips together as shown in the photos. Adjust as desired and use pins or clips to secure the edges if necessary.

Edging:

Using a single strand of white yarn, make a slip knot on your hook and work a single crochet in the center section of the heart on the left half. Chain 1. Continue by making a single crochet and chaining 1 around all edges of the heart, working three [single crochet, chain 1] along each of the strip edges to secure them.
