DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 1998 Obituaries James Antone, 84, New York newsman NEW YORK Longtime New York City newsman James Antone, whose given name was James Tricarico, died Thursday after a brief illness.

He was 84. He died in New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens. Mr. Antone was a reporter and assistant news editor at Women's Wear Daily from 1945 to 1979, when he retired. A member of the Newspaper Reporters Association, now The New York Press Club, he served as its president in 1961.

In 1978, he was elected president of The Inner Circle, an organization of reporters who put on an annual show lampooning the city's elected officials. Born Jan. 25, 1914, in East Harlem, Mr. Antone attended New York University and later served in the Army during World War II. Joe Dixon, 81, jazz musician NEW YORK Joe Dixon, a clarinetist and saxophonist who played with many of the great jazz ensembles during a career that began in the 1930s and lasted about 50 years, died on May 28 at his home in Oceanside.

He was 81. Mr. Dixon, who was born in Lynn, began studying clarinet at age 8 and played his first recital at 12. After hearing a recording by Bix Beiderbecke, he bought an alto saxophone and added jazz to his repertory, although he continued his classical studies at the New England Conservatory of Music. He joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in 1936 and also played with Bunny Berigani.
