Content sounds scary. But if the EIA completed, all processes followed, and is approved, all is well I believe. Were these concerns submitted during the EIA? Ignored perhaps? Or just that feedback (proposed measures) was never shared with concerned stakeholder?

My colleagues say I am a bad communicator. I do not dispute. I can go quiet for weeks especially when I am struggling to connect certain dots. A terrible thing to do in business. But I am better than our public offices handling environmental and mining licensing. I guess not only these, but many other licencing offices.Their systems can be down for weeks and won't bother to put out a public notice to notify those they serve. Just something simple and formal. As such, you won't know unless you walk in to inquire or make a submission. As a public servant myself, yes I am, it pains me to see my uncles coming all the way from rural areas with their papers to the city where these offices are located, using the few cents they have, just to be told nothing is working since xyz. I mean, what is more painful than that.I promised my colleagues to do better. Can these offices please join me, and promise to do better with communication? It takes less than 2 hours to draft a 'notice' - come on! We serve people, not ourselves. Africa is Waiting!

Question to a bushman: "What do you do when wildlife you survive on has relocated?". Answer: "You follow (wildlife) or wait and starve to death. Nomadic way of life is not by choice. It is for survival. Keep moving. Africa is Waiting!

"I do not make decisions thinking about re-election. I was not elected to be re-elected. I was elected to transform a country (Kenya)" - President William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap RutoHe has a good point. Most African leaders are afraid to make drastic and impactful decisions, because of fear to lose support base and the next elections. They make decisions to keep hungry people happy, not transform the lives of the masses in the shortest time possible even if it means going against people's expectations along the way. Africa needs leaders who are not power hungry and have full understanding of what needs to be done to get people out of poverty within their first term of office. Not leaders who say sweet things to keep the number of (hungry) followers for the next elections.

The Central Namib. Probably one of the few places I will dearly miss after retirement in 2 years time. I have known this area for many years - thanks to being a "jack of all trades" scientist. Name but a few;- it was here that I did GIS mapping of off road tracks for possible rehabilitation years ago as a research intern at Gobabeb- during the same time, I was doing daily, monthly and occasional data collection exercises on aspects related to remote sensing, ecology, climate, weather and geomorphology/geology- it was about this area that my Masters of Geoinformation Science supervisor realised that I am more about solutions generation research, than research for general understanding of a subject. I spent 2 years or so trying to understand the spatial distribution of fog in the Central Namib, using satellite and ground stationed data products. Later I realised there was very little chance I could use that knowledge to enhance life of others and society. So I ran away.- then I was in the same district as an employee at Langer Heinrich- in recent years, we are here now and then carrying out assessments for minerals rights holders, pumping of boreholes, investigations, logging and as a geologist searching for various minerals including Uranium- so I know this district from minerals, to weather, to beetles, geckos and all other organisms, gravel plains, mountains to dunes, who disturbed what area and left it unrehabilitated for so long, to which track is going where...Yesterday while in the area, and chatting with those in company, we kinda came to this conclusion:We concluded informally and without any factual figures that the Uranium resources under our windy Desert grounds are enough to power Namibia for the next decades. But only if we wanted to consider that option. It seems, though, that (strong) desire is not there at the moment. We would rather go for other options that can give us global recognition (as first in Africa to do xyz blah blah) instead of using what is under our feet. Well, Namibia is Waiting.

Me explaining to my son what conferences/workshops panel discussions are:A set up where people sit and just talk and talk and talk when others are listening. All that is shared is good news, never bad news (ground realities). Then they follow up with refreshment for a job well-done. Ask them 3, 6, 12 months down the line what (tangible) and society-changing developments have come out of the 'talking and talking' sessions, and you will be told all sort of excuses."Not what Africa needs if you ask me my son!"

In my opinion - water provision should take up a big chunk of any country fighting to overcome poverty and inequality. More so for countries like Namibia where climatic conditions are unfavorable in most parts. The only weapon there is for individuals to free themselves from hunger and empty pockets is access to water. There should be no limitations and countless 'save-water' notices.Because - where water flows, food grows. And where water flows, industries of all sorts and sizes can be created. No one would want to put down world-class industries in an area where every morning the first thing one sees is a reminder-notice to reduce the use of water substantially in domestic terms, not to shower for too long, wait until dishes have piled up before washing them and as a result attracting co*ckroaches, where their kids cannot play in pools as they please and whenever, and where people can not freely water their gardens and farming plots. So - I am a bit disappointed that no CEO, MD, Director, Executive was intrigued to entertain my call for community boreholes sponsorship. But I also understand, enough to overcome this disappointment. Having been here for sometime now, and having covered all corners of our country, I have come to learn that many of these widely circulated sponsorships are not given to solve real ground society challenges but to buy faces, associations, recognitions, new opportunities and accolades. This is a sad reality. I guess we will have to continue doing the bit we could from here to water society.Africa is Waiting!
