How To Assemble A Po Boy Sandwich

A po boy sandwich is meant to be busting at the seams, so don’t skimp on any of the ingredients. Follows these steps for building the perfect po boy;

  • Begin by slicing your bread in half. Don’t bother leaving the bread “hinged” because you can’t fit as much on the sandwich, and that’s not how they do it in NOLA.
  • Next, smear a generous helping of remoulade onto both halves of the bread.
  • Place your fried shrimp onto the bottom half of the bread.
  • Then pile on the toppings of your choice to ‘dress’ the sandwich.

FAQs

What Is A Po’ Boy?

A Po Boy is a sandwich consisting of a crusty roll filled with meat — usually roast beef, chicken, or fried seafood. While fish and oysters are undoubtedly popular, po boys made with fried shrimp are a crowd favorite.

It’s believed that the po boy sandwich was invented during the 1929 streetcar workers strike. Owners of a local restaurant, who also worked as streetcar conductors, provided a free sandwich for the “poor boys” that were on strike. The deep southern accent of Louisiana natives pronounce poor boy as po boy, and the name stuck.

What Is Remoulade?

Although mayonnaise is the traditional condiment for a shrimp po boy, I think that Remoulade sauce provides the sandwich with a perfect amount of spice to really kick up the flavor.

Shrimp Remoulade is made with mayonnaise mixed with garlic, sriracha, and hot sauce. It’s awesome on all sorts of sandwiches, and also makes a great dipping sauce for other fried seafood, green tomatoes, and crab cakes.

How Do I Dress My Po Boy?

Step up to any Louisiana sandwich counter to order a po boy, and the server will ask if you want your sandwich dressed. Dressed means that lettuce, tomato, and onions will be added to your sandwich.
