The Threefold Blanket is made up of 35 squares arranged in a 5 x 7 format and finished with a 9 round border to give an approximate blanket size of 96 x 130 cm. As you might have guessed from the name of this blanket, the design of the Threefold Blanket relates to the number three. Each of the 35 Threefold Squares is made up of three coloured stripes with a contrast colour in between.
The Threefold Square is worked in rows using the same stitch as I used in my Spicy Orange Blanket – which is the half treble v-stitch (UK terms). Thislovely pattern creates really satisfying straight and neat lines, which work well in stripes.
Crochet Hook:4mm or size needed to achieve gauge
Yarn: DK weight yarn in nine colours, 100g/295m of each of 8 colours and 400g/1880m in a contrast colour.

Notes on the pattern
This is a really simple pattern, based on a 1 row repeat. The pattern uses the htr stitch worked in groups of 2 (htr clusters) and is similar to the v-stitch. It differs from the traditional v-stitch as it worked in half treble crochet stitches rather than treble crochet stitches and there is no chain stitch between the two stitches. This gives a tighter and less holey structure to the work. Each htr cluster is worked in the middle of the corresponding htr cluster of the row below, giving an appearance of a stack of V’s.
Notes on the Squares
Each square has a starting chain of 28 and each square is worked in rows – 20 rows. You will need to check that each of your Threefold Squares measures the same across the height and the width as this is crucial to this pattern working. My squares measured 16cm x 16cm. If you find that the height and the width are different lengths – then you have two options. Either change the hook size (which will make your stitches taller or shorter depending on whether you go up or down a hook size), or adjust the starting chain (this should always be a multiple of 2).
There are 12 different squares to make – each with a different colour combination. The basic pattern for the square is below. Scroll further down the page to find a list of the colours for each of the squares and how many to make of each square.
Each square will have 3 stripes of colour with the contrast colour (Graphite) in between.
Instructions
Foundation Row:Using Graphite colour yarn. Chain 28 (multiple of 2)
R1: 2htr in 4th ch from the hook, skip 1ch, *2htr in next, skip 1ch*, repeat from *to* until last ch, 1htr in last ch. Turn.
R2: In row 2 you will working 2htrin betweenthe 2htr of the row below. ch2 (counts as 1htr), 2htr in between the two htr of the first htr cluster in the row below, *work 2htr in between the next htr cluster,* repeat from *to* until the last stitch (which is the turning chain), 1htr in the turning ch. Turn.
R3: Switch to yarn A, repeat R2
R4-R6: Continue with yarn A. Repeat R2.
R7-R8:work as for R2 using Graphite colour yarn
R9-R12: work as for R2 using yarn B
R13-R14: work as for R2 using Graphite colour yarn
R15-R18: work as for R2 using yarn C
R19-R20: work as for R2 using Graphite colour yarn. Fasten off and sew in ends.

Once you have made your 35 squares, arrange the squares according to the photo below.
Joining the Squares
You can choose how you join your squares together. I sewed my squares together using Graphite colour yarn. You can use any sewing or crochet method of doing that you wish.
Border
The border for this blanket is worked over 9 rounds – using Graphite, Clematis, Sherbet, Wisteria and Aspen. You can use any of the left over colours.
The first round of the border is worked in Graphite and with 2htr worked in the spaces between the htr clusters. The subsequent rounds are worked with 2htr in betweenthe 2htr of the round below (just like in the main body of each of the squares).
Instructions for the border
Border R1: With Graphite yarn pull up a loop in the first stitch on square in the top right corner of the blanket, ch2 (counts as 1htr), work 1htr in the same space.
Skip the next 2 stitches and work 2htr in the space between the two htr clusters
Continue to work along the first square with 2htr in each space between htr clusters (you should have 13 htr clusters along the top of the first square.
Work along the top of the next square (this square will be one that has the stripes vertical). Work 13 htr clusters along this square work around the post of the stitches and space these out evenly along the side of the square.
Continue to work along the top of the blanket working 13 htr clusters across each square. When you reach the top left corner, work [2htr, ch2, 2htr] in the last stitch, and turn the corner. Work down the side of the blanket continuing with 13 htr clusters along each square.
Work [2htr, ch2, 2htr] in the corner space. Then work along the final two sides in the same way with [2htr,ch2, 2htr] in the corners. Upon reaching the corner where you started the round, work [2htr, ch2] in the first stitch of the round, then ss into the beg-ch2. Turn your blanket over, ss back into the same corner space.
Border round 2: Ch2 (counts as 1htr). Work 2htrin between each ofthe 2htr stitches of the row below, upon reaching the corner work [1htr, 2ch, 1htr], turn the corner and continue to work 2htrin betweenthe 2htr of the row below. Continue working in this way around all sides. Upon reaching the start of the round work [1htr, ch2], ss into the beg-ch2. Fasten off Graphite yarn.
Border round 3: Turn. Using Clematis yarn, pull up a loop in any chain 2 corner space. Ch2 (counts as 1htr), 1htr in the same space.
