Who is Golden Brooks?
American actress, writer and producer Golden Brooks, was born in San Francisco, California USA on 1 December 1970 under the zodiac sign of Sagittarius. She’s appeared in more than 50 movies and TV series, while Golden’s perhaps still best known for her portrayal of one of the main characters Maya Denise Wilkes in the comedy series “Girlfriends”, created by Mara Brock Akil, and in which Tracee Ellis Ross and Persia White also starred. It follows the lives of four entirely different women, the series aired from 2000 to 2008 and won eight of its 37 award nominations, including a 2003 Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Cinematography for a Multi-Camera Series.
Early life and education
Golden’s parents Walter and Barbara Brooks raised her in San Francisco, and it appears that Golden’s an only child, having not spoken of having siblings; it’s believed that her mother was an elementary school teacher, and her father a businessman.
Golden grew up interested in dancing, and practiced modern dance, jazz and ballet. She was a highly active teenager, and took part in numerous activities while attending a local high school in San Francisco, as she appeared in numerous plays with her school’s drama club, as well in several theatre plays, also practiced aerobics and ran track, while she was also into creative writing.
Upon completing her high school education in 1989, Golden enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in literature and sociology in 1993; she continued her education at Sarah Lawrence College, and graduated with a Master’s degree in 1995.

Roles in TV series
Golden’s debut TV series appearance was in the 1996 episode “Crisis in the Love Zone” of the popular family comedy drama “The Adventures of Pete & Pete”, created by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi, and which starred Michael C. Maronna, Danny Tamberelli and Judy Grafe. It follows the lives of brothers who are both named Pete, the series aired from 1992 to 1996, and won one of its five award nominations.
She became somewhat popular in 1998, when cast to star as CeCe Jennings in the comedy drama “Linc’s”, created by Susan Fales-Hill and Tim Reid, and which also starred Steven Williams and Georg Stanford Brown. It follows the life of the owner of Washington D.C.’s Linc’s Bar and Grill, the series aired from 1998 to 2000, and was nominated for five awards.
Golden was then invited to make a guest appearance in a couple of hit series, such as the comedies “The Parkers”, “The Jamie Foxx Show”, and the family comedy drama “Moesha”.
In 2012 and 2013, Golden played Ruby Jeffries in the romantic comedy drama “Hart of Dixie”, written by by Leila Gerstein, and in which Cress Williams and Jaime King starred. It follows doctor Zoe Hart who’s moved to Bluebell, Alabama after having been invited to work for Dr. Harley Wilkes, while she’s now learned that he’s passed away and left her in charge of his practice; the series aired from 2011 to 2015 and won one of its five award nominations.
Some of Golden’s most recent roles in TV series have been in the 2019 episode “Feminisn’t” of the comedy “Black-ish”, the 2020 episode “A Long Look in the Mirror” of the drama “BET Her Presents: The Waiting Room”, and two episodes of the 2021 romantic action drama “Station 19”.
Roles in movies
Golden made her film debut in the 1997 short drama “Drive by: A Love Story”, and gained recognition in the following year when cast to play Gold in the crime drama “Hell’s Kitchen”, written and directed by Tony Cinciripini, and which starred Rosanna Arquette, William Forsythe and Angelina Jolie. It follows three people who’ve committed a robbery, one of whom has been killed, another incarcerated, while Patty’s run away with all the money.
A couple of Golden’s following roles were in the 1998 drama “Zero Stress”, the 2000 romantic drama “Timecode”, and the 2001 short mystery “Asylum”.

In 2006, Golden played Suzette, one of the main characters in the romantic comedy drama “Something New”, directed by Sanaa Hamri, and which also starred Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker. It follows accountant Kenya McQueen who’s fallen in love with landscaper Brian Kelly, and the film won four of its 14 award nominations.
Golden portrayed Molly Daly in the 2018 action adventure drama “The Darkest Minds”, directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, and which starred Mandy Moore, Amandla Stenberg and Bradley Whitford. It follows a group of teenagers who are fighting against the world which fears all those below the age of 18 – the movie won one of its four award nominations.
Golden’s three most recent film roles have been in the 2020 comedy “Kiss Me For Christmas”, the 2021 romantic drama “Coins Forever”, and the 2022 comedy “Block Party”; she’s currently shooting for the upcoming movie “Packz”.

Golden wrote the 2007 episode “Snap Back” of the comedy series “Girlfriends”, and produced the 2017 drama movie “The White Sistas”.
She was featured in the TV special “Source Awards 2001”, the 2003 “34th NAACP Image Awards”, and the 2004 short documentary video “The Making of ‘Motives’”.

Golden won a 2004 BET Comedy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, for her performance in “Girlfriends”, and won a 2010 American Black Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for Best Actor, for “The Inheritance”.
She was also nominated for a 2005 Black Reel Award for Best Actress, Independent Film, for her performance in “Motives”, and for two Image Awards in 2003 and 2008 for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, for “Girlfriends”.

Golden’s amongst the most secretive of actresses in the film industry, as she prefers to keep her private life separated from her professional life, while it’s still widely known that she’s today a mother of one. She began dating American actor, writer and director D. B. Woodside in 2008, after having met him on a movie set; the pair were often seen spending time together, whether at restaurants, Los Angeles clubs or red carpet events, and Golden gave birth to their daughter Dakota Tao Brooks-Woodside on 1 September 2009. However, the two split in 2010, but it’s believed that they are both equally involved in Dakota’s upbringing.
There are no other men (or women) whom Golden’s been romantically linked to, that the public knows about, so she seems to be single as of September 2009, and has a daughter Dakota with former boyfriend D. B. Woodside.

Hobbies and other interests
Golden was an avid figure skater during her teenage years, and entered several ice skating competitions, winning multiple trophies.
She’s a philanthropist, and is today mostly focused on volunteering with AIDS Project Los Angeles and Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
Golden’s a member of the Robey Theater Company, in which she’s acting together with famous American actor Danny Glover.
