The body and sleeves of thelong cardiganare crocheted in Mini Bean Stitch (also known as the Elizabeth Stitch). This stitch gives a lovely texture and is visually appealing too. If you’re fed up of using the same stitches in your projects, you’ll love working on this pattern.

The cuffs, hem and edging are crocheted in single/double crochet back loop only. This is my favourite of the ribbing techniques and looks great widthways and lengthways.

The numbers below correspond to the numbered images above giving more detail:

  1. From the bottom to underarm, the cardi is crocheted in one piece, worked flat and turned to work in rows.
  2. The piece is then split to work the left front, back and right front of the cardigan separately. The pattern continues to work flat and is turned to work in rows.
  3. Next, the shoulders are seamed. The left front and right front are sewn to the back piece to create the shoulder seams.
  4. The sleeves are worked directly into the armhole, worked in rounds but turned after each round.
  5. Finally, the cuffs, hem and edging of the cardigan are worked.

Yarn

I used Himalaya Mona for the body and sleeves of this crochet cardigan. I bought mine fromThe Knitting Networkbut you can alsobuy on Amazon.

This is a DK weight self-striping wool blend yarn (15% wool, 85% acrylic) and is incredibly durable and easy to care for. I really like how it worked up and it gave my cardigan a fab drape. It was easy to match the stripes (although it took more yarn to get it to match).

If you can’t get hold of Himalya Mona, you canfind a list of yarn substitutions on Yarn Sub. This easy cardi would look just as good crocheted in one colour.

I started off using the same yarn for the ribbed hem, cuffs andedgingbut didn’t like how mis-matched it felt with the stripes of the cardi. After trial and error, the third yarn I tried I loved,Drops Soft Tweedin Strawberry Cream. A little different in fibre mix (25% Viscose, 50% Wool, 25% Alpaca) I think the colour gives the cardigan a lift and really compliments all the colours. More importantly, it matches the feel and drape of the Himalaya Mona. The only difference is the care instructions (handwash). I’ve been putting my cardigan in the washing machine on a wool wash at 30 degrees and it has been fine.

Important Note: If you substitute the yarn, look for a similar blend of fibres or yarn that matches the gauge. When you crochet your swatch, check the drape and gauge to make sure you’re happy before starting to crochet.

FAQs

What is the best crochet stitch for a cardigan? ›

Single crochets are the most basic of crochet stitches. This stitch creates a dense fabric with almost no holes, which is perfect for creating warm cardigans. Half double crochet stitches are taller than a single crochet (sc) but smaller than a double crochet (dc).

Can I crochet a cardigan as a beginner? ›

If you have just a little experience under your belt, don't let it turn you away because it's easy to learn! Or an option for true beginners is that you could just use the double crochet and single crochet stitches and create a lovely sweater without the drop stitch rows.

Can you crochet a sweater? ›

The answer is yes and yes. Both the crafts of crocheting and knitting can each produce a sweater from the same yarn, but the results won't look or feel the same. So first let's take a look at the features of the crocheted fabric and understand how different it is from the knitted fabric.

What size yarn is best for cardigans? ›

Yarn Size 1: Fingering Weight

Fingering weight yarn (also known as super fine, sock, or baby yarn) is a good choice for crocheting garments and accessories, because it's light enough to allow great drape and warmth. Fingering weight yarn is commonly used for colorwork, socks, accessories, and sweaters.

What is the first thing you should crochet as a beginner? ›

Start With Something Simple

The first thing a beginner should crochet is something simple, like a granny square—or a piece of square fabric made by crocheting in rounds from the center outward. Granny squares are generally easy crochet patterns for beginners and take under an hour to complete.

What is the easiest project for a beginner crochet? ›

One of my favorite beginner-friendly crochet projects is the Jorja Scarf (Pattern is free here by Tinderbox). I made mine using 2 skeins of Billow yarn. This particular scarf works up really quickly with bulky yarn & a large hook size, and it utilizes the double crochet stitch.

What is the easiest thing to crochet first? ›

A scarf is one of the easiest crochet projects to start.

How many crochet squares for a cardigan? ›

How many granny squares does it take to make a cardigan? You are going to need 38 granny squares for sizes XS to L and 70 granny squares for XL to 5XL to crochet the granny square cardigan.

How many skeins for a granny square cardigan? ›

XS/S you need 1 skein of each color, and 2 skeins for the color you use for the ribbing. M/L & XL/2XL you need 2 skeins of each color, and 3 skeins for the color you use for the ribbing. 3XL/4XL you need 3 skeins of each color, and 4 skeins for the color you use for the ribbing.

Is crochet harder than knitting? ›

I've taught both at beginner level and this is what I've always said. Knitting is easier to start but harder to master, crochet is harder to start but easier to master.

Is it better to crochet or knit a cardigan? ›

Why? Knit fabric is generally more soft and flexible than crocheted fabric, which makes it ideal for items you want to flow, drape, or wear against the body. For example, you might be better off knitting items such as: sweaters.

Which crochet stitch is best for a sweater? ›

Single crochet (sc): This stitch is even shorter than hdc and creates a dense, tight fabric that is ideal for sweaters and other garments that need to be warm and cozy. Shell stitch: This decorative stitch creates a lacy, open fabric that is perfect for lighter-weight sweaters and garments.

Which crochet stitch looks most like knitting? ›

The waistcoat stitch is the closest crochet version of a knit stockinette stitch. Each crochet stitch looks like a "V" and when worked in the round, is almost indistinguishable from actual knit fabric at first glance.
