Blocking:

If you are using natural fiber yarn – Soak the finished granny square for 10 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp square on blocking boards and use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your granny square dry completely before unpinning.

If you are using synthetic yarn – You can steam block either with a hand steamer or the steam function of your iron by holding the steamer above your granny square for a couple of seconds making sure you don’t touch the yarn otherwise it will burn.

Easy Granny Squares for Beginners

Why is my crochet granny square not flat? ›

Choose a bigger or smaller hook than what has been prescribed. If your squares are tight, curling up or looking round, it could be that your hook size is too small. If your square is really floppy and ruffling, it could be that the hook is too large. I always advise increasing by 0.5mm each time.

How long should it take to crochet a granny square? ›

The short answer is it totally depends. A 4-6 round granny square can be made in 10 minutes or less. Large granny square blankets might take 6-8 hours to make.

How do you crochet Peggy squares together? ›

Lay the granny squares flat with the right side facing up. Join the new yarn in the corner of two granny squares, at the opposite end that you normally would. Make a reverse single crochet using the front loops of each stitch on both granny squares, including the spaces between clusters and in the corner space.

What stitch is used in granny squares? ›

The Classical Granny Square consists of chains, slip stitches and double crochets. All three stitches are basic crochet stitches that a beginner can make. The stitch rhythm is repetitive. This helps you get a feel for the pattern and understand how the stitches create the motif.

What is the best soft yarn for granny squares? ›

If you want a cool, summer piece, cotton is your best option. And if you want something very soft, alpaca or merino wool will be best. You can also use sparkly yarns for a fun look. For beginners, we suggest bulky yarns for granny squares!

How do you increase a granny square stitch? ›

You can continue increasing the size of your granny square to make it as large as you like. Simply work 3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc in each corner and 3 dc in each space, joining at the end of each row and beginning the new round with a ch 3 for the first dc stitch.
