This walkthrough will guide you through Chapter 1 of Osvald’s story in Octopath Traveler 2 by covering parts of the plot, while also providing info on dungeon layouts and tips for the boss fight.

Introduction

Osvald’s tale opens on a dark situation – the scholar is in a courtroom where he’s currently on trial for the murders of his wife and daughter. According to the prosecutor, there was a fire and their bodies were pulled from the rubble. No evidence of a natural fire could be found, so Osvald is accused of using flame magic to murder his family.

Osvald is found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment in a location called Frigit Isle. Despite the verdict, Osvald swears revenge on a man named Harvey, implying that he is the true culprit.

Frigit Isle: Prison

We jump forward five years, now inside the Frigit Isle prison. This story contains far less exploration and combat than most since Osvald can’t leave the prison yet – the setup and plot are at the forefront in this chapter.

The scholar’s cellmate steals his notebook, turning the situation into a lesson on Osvald’s nighttime Path Action: Mug. Use it on the other prisoner to retrieve the notebook. You won’t be able to use magic just yet since Osvald is muzzled, but you can still attack with your Staff weapon for an easy win.

After losing, the cellmate will yell to attract Warden Davids and the other guards. Of course, the warden gets violent, but Osvald uses the situation to gain valuable information about their response time.

Osvald has been writing down his escape plan in that notebook, and only three pieces of his plan need reviewing at this point: the escape route, suitable clothing, and an accomplice.

Frigit Isle: Yard

Now that you have free time in the yard, you’ll need to finalize the three remaining parts of the escape plan mentioned above. The three quest markers on the map will show you exactly where to go for each step of the plan.

The closest objective is directly above you and it’ll provide a tutorial for Osvald’s daytime Path Action: Scrutinize. Use the ability to find an accomplice for the escape plan. To advance, scrutinize Emerald – the man in the top-right corner of the room. Choose the ‘the latter’ option when he asks you about a jailbreak, and he’ll offer his help.

The next time you’re in the yard, head directly to your left to find another quest marker. Here, you’ll meet a man named Bale, the Provisioner. But he won’t help you for free. Scrutinize the man who’s standing north of the Save Point to find Bale’s weakness.

Return to Bale with that newfound knowledge to obtain cold-weather wear that’ll keep Osvald warm during the escape.

After witnessing a flashback scene involving Harvey and Osvald, you’ll end up back in the yard again. Now, head over to the final marker to review the escape route. Scrutinize the prisoner at the very back of the room to gain the intel you need.

Apparently, this prisoner is one of the men who helped build the underground passage you’ll be using. He’ll point you in the direction of the library. Interact with the glowing bookshelf there to find the labor report.

Escaping the Prison

After another Harvey flashback, Emerald will approach Osvald in the mining area. Warden Davids will interrupt your conversation, so meet Emerald at the storehouse behind the mess hall in the yard – it’s time to get out of Frigit Isle.

Emerald officially joins the party as you make your way to the underground passageway through the west side of the yard.

Prison: Underground Passage

Emerald is, essentially, a thief who can heal. He’ll handle the physical attacking and support while Osvald uses multi-target fire and ice magic to deal damage. Osvald can also automatically reveal one weakness for each foe with his Study Foe Talent.

Try to at least reach level six and earn 30 JP(Job Points) here to unlock Osvald’s Skill options in the menu. Doing so will allow him to learn lightning magic or the ever-useful Analyze skill, which reveals an enemy's HP and weaknesses.

All enemies in this chapter’s boss fight are weak to lightning, so Lightning Bolt is the best choice for your first new skill.

Boss Battle: Warden Davids

Warden Davids shows up to stop the escape, surprising no one. He has two prison guards on his side, but they do share some weaknesses, which is perfect since Osvald’s magic and Emerald’s Dagger skill hit multiple enemies at once.

Davids is weak to Osvald’s fire, and the guards are weak to his ice. And all three enemies are weak to lightning.

Use Emerald’s Stab in the Dark to break multiple shields at once, and his Sabotage to weaken the warden. You’ll also get a tutorial here for Osvald’s Latent Power: Concentrate Spells. The ability allows him to turn his AoE spells into single-target attacks that deal more damage.

More guards surround Osvald and Emerald after the battle, but they manage to get away by blowing a hole through the back wall of the room. This escape will take you straight into Chapter 2 of Osvald’s story as his struggle to leave Frigit Isle continues.
